What makes Paris a Unique Place to Study

What makes Paris a unique place to study?

Audrey Hepburn famously said, “Paris is always a good idea.” And we think so too. Its rich cultural heritage, world-class universities, diverse and vast student population, and position as a leading cultural heavyweight make it especially so for those looking to study abroad or study in France.

Universities in Paris

When weighing up the benefits for international students living in Paris, a decision-making factor for many aspiring higher education students is cost. The average yearly cost of internationals’ tuition fees in Paris is €2,770 for bachelor’s courses and €3,770 for master’s courses.

A tempting prospect for those studying in the UK and paying an average of £9,250 per year, and a no brainer for US students who pay an eyewatering average of $38,185 per year for their university education. But cheap doesn’t mean weak.

According to the QS World University Rankings 2024, Paris is home to four of the top 100 global universities, with its best institution, Université PSL (Paris Sciences & Lettres), placing at 24th. Coming in behind it are Institut Polytechnique de Paris (38th), Sorbonne University (59th), and Université Paris-Saclay (71st).

Learn another language in Paris

Living in a culture that doesn’t share your mother-tongue means you’re highly likely to pick up the native language, either by study or by immersing yourself in the city. That extra language can be a beneficial asset to your study, add some flair to your resumé and help you communicate whilst travelling abroad.

Students in Paris will find themselves in the epicentre of cultural prowess. No other city of the same size is singularly responsible for as much artistic influence. With a plethora of museums, galleries and cultural sightseeing nearby to La Defense student accommodation, Paris offers overseas students a unique experience.

Exploring Paris as a Student

International students seeking culture are rewarded in this stunning city with discounts as well as free events. To name but a few:

  • Printemps du cinema (last days of Spring): for three days each year, all cinema tickets are €5.
  • Fête de la Musique (June 21st): a countrywide party in which musicians and DJs play in the streets. Montmartre becomes a particularly vibey street party.
  • Paris Jazz Festival (July/August): Al-fresco jazz concerts in Parc Floral – students pay a reduced price, well below €5.

You can discover much more, as well as information on the best upcoming cinema, shows, exhibitions, events, and concerts in L’Officiel des spectacles – a weekly culture magazine. Most of Paris’ museums are also free for students that are 26 and under, this includes the biggest ones like Musée Rodin, Musée d'Orsay, and the Louvre. 27+’s are still eligible for reduced tickets with student cards, as well as free entry to the majority of museums on the first Sunday of every month.

Exploring Beyond Paris

Finally, when you’re done exploring Paris is well-connected and surrounded by must-see sights.

Giverny, the home of impressionist icon and founder Claude Monet, is only 50 minutes away. Visiting his home, viewers will recognise that it is where he created some of his most famous and beautiful masterpieces. Students rejoice: if you’re running low on Monet, show your student card for a 62% discount on your ticket. Giverny itself is picturesque, featuring historic buildings, long walks, and delicious local food.

Travelling across France as a student is cheap and cheerful, too. By train, you can get to Nice for around €25, Bordeaux for about €20, and Marseille, Lyon and Toulouse for under €20. And for those thinking of studying in Paris from further afield, the rest of Europe – much like your future – is at your feet.

Lower Your Student Carbon Footprint

World Earth Day is a yearly event that honours the planet and highlights the problems we need to fix to protect it. To slow and start reversing climate change, we all need to cut our CO2e contributions by more than half, to around 5 tonnes. That might seem like a big ask, but it’s doable with some simple changes in how you go about your days as a student. Better still, these changes can save (or make) you money. And what student doesn’t love that?
